Lecture summary: The system for dispute resolution between staff members and the Organization that has been in place within the United Nations until recently has suffered severe criticism from staff associations, legal practitioners and academics. Efforts to improve the internal justice system have been going on for years, ultimately leading to the establishment of a completely new system of administration of justice. After identifying the major weaknesses of the old system, the focus of the talk will lie on an analysis of the new internal justice system. Will it be able to live up to teh expectations and eliminate the shortcomings of the old system? What are the strengths of the new system and where are its weaknesses? Although the newly established system of dispute resolution within the United Nations seems to constitute a significan improvement compared to the old system, there are still some issues that have not been solved satisfactorily and that merit closer attention.
