Ms Valentina Falco

Anthony Cullen

Ms Valentina Falco is a British Red Cross Research Fellow on the joint British Red Cross/International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) project to update the practice section of the ICRC’s Study on Customary International Humanitarian Law.

Valentina is currently completing a PhD in Law at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, with a thesis on the applicability of international humanitarian law to multinational military forces. She holds a degree in Law from the University of Milan, and a Master of Research (MRes) in Law from the EUI. Her research work on the role of custom in international humanitarian law was awarded the 2006-2007 “Giuseppe Barile and Pietro Verri” Prize.

A former fellow in the “European Foreign and Security Policy Studies” Programme, Valentina has been a human rights consultant for the European Commission and for the International Centre for the Legal Protection of Human Rights (INTERIGHTS). She has also collaborated, among others, with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, and the Legal Service of the Council of the European Union.
