Yas Banifatemi heads Shearman & Sterling's Public International Law practice and is Deputy Managing Partner of the firms' International Arbitration group, as well as the co-head of the firm's Energy practice. She is a Vice-President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and a member of the LCIA Court.

Yas Banifatemi advises and represents States, State-owned entities and corporations on both public international law and international arbitration issues. She acts as counsel and arbitrator in arbitration cases under a variety of Rules, with particular focus on international investment and oil & gas. Her PIL practice includes both advisory and advocacy work on all aspects of Public International Law, and ranges through the Law of Treaties, State responsibility, Law of the Sea, State and diplomatic immunities, international organizations, sanctions and trade embargoes, and international investments.

She holds a Doctoral degree in Public International Law ("PIL") from Panthéon-Assas University (Paris II). She has taught PIL since 1990, both at University of Paris II and University of Paris I, as well as The Hague Academy of International Law (Public International Law session). She has authored numerous publications on PIL.
