Location:
Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, Finley Library

Professor Richard Lazarus is the Howard J. & Katherine W. Aibel Professor of Law at Harvard University and is currently the Herbert Smith Freehills Visitor to the Faculty of Law and a Visiting Scholar at Jesus College at the University of Cambridge. Professor Lazarus is the leading scholar in the United States on environmental law and the United States Supreme Court. His book, The Making of Environmental Law (2004), is considered the definitive history of U.S. environmental law. His forthcoming book, Rule of Five: Climate Warriors in the Supreme Court (Harvard University Press), tells the story of the most important environmental case ever decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, in which the Court held that persons alleging climate injury may seek redress from U.S. courts and that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has authority to restrict greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to his legal scholarship,

Professor Lazarus has himself litigated forty cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and has personally presented oral argument in fourteen of those cases. President Barack Obama appointed Professor Lazarus to investigate on his behalf the root causes of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. He serves on the Board of the Environmental Defense Fund and as Chair of EDF’s Litigation Committee.
