Speaker: Charles Claypoole is a partner in the London office of Latham & Watkins where he specialises in advising on public international law, international arbitration, including investment treaty arbitration, and international trade law. He graduated from St Catharine’s College, Cambridge in 1992. Charles is ranked by Chambers UK, one of the leading legal directories, in Band One for public international law and in Band Two for sanctions. He has experience in acting as counsel in numerous inter-State disputes, including before the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and in investment treaty arbitrations under the main arbitration rules. He has acted as counsel for numerous States, including Pakistan, Yemen, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, North Macedonia, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Croatia and Kazakhstan and in several high-profile cases, including Littop Enterprises Limited and others v. Ukraine, the largest case ever brought against Ukraine, which was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction with an order that Ukraine be reimbursed all its costs, and Frenkel v. Croatia, which was dismissed on grounds of res judicata and issue estoppel with Croatia being awarded all its costs. Charles is ranked as one the leading sanctions lawyers in Europe, and led the Latham & Watkins team advising UniCredit in UniCredit Bank GmbH v RusChemAlliance LLC, resulting in the ground-breaking judgment of the English Supreme Court that Global Arbitration Review selected as the most significant decision of 2024.
