It was with great sadness that the Centre learned of the death of Professor Hugh Thirlway, an Honorary Fellow at the Centre, who passed away on 13 October 2019.

Professor Thirlway has for many years served as the Principal Legal Secretary at the International Court of Justice and, after leaving his post, was Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Visiting Professor at Bristol University, and Visiting Professor at the University of Leiden.

Professor Thirlway was the author of many timeless publications. The second edition of his book, ‘The Sources of International Law’ (OUP), had just been published in 2019.  He was also the author of the monumental work on ‘The Law and Procedure of the International Court of Justice. Fifty Years of Jurisprudence’ (OUP, 2016).

He worked until the very end of his life and shortly before he passed away he managed to conclude a chapter on the significance of procedure in the settlement of international disputes, a subject to which he had made such a significant contribution.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his loved ones, family and friends.
