Stephen Schwebel, former Judge and President of the International Court of Justice, died on Thursday 9 April 2026 at his home in Manhattan at the age of 97. He was a Member of the Court from 1981 to 2000, serving as President from 1997 to 2000 and as Vice-President from 1994 to 1997.

Stephen was a close lifelong friend of the Lauterpacht Centre’s founder, the late Eli Lauterpacht. He was a great supporter and champion of the Centre in its early days and became an Honorary Fellow. He frequently visited Cambridge where he made many friends.

He also gave an interview for the Eminent Scholars Archive in May 2009 when inter alia he spoke of his early recollections of Hersch Lauterpacht in 1950. 

Stephen will be sadly missed.
