Profile:

Quirin Bernhard is a PhD candidate at the University of Augsburg. His research is funded by a scholarship from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. Prior to being awarded the scholarship, he worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Public Law, International Law and European Law at the University of Augsburg, coaching the university's Jessup Moot Court teams from 2023 to 2025.

Research Area:

International Human Rights, Reproductive Rights

Research Title:

The Human Right to Abortion - A Controversial "new" Right at a Time of Human Rights Scepticism

Research Outline:

Quirin's research focuses on the 'human right to abortion' in the context of growing scepticism towards the international human rights system.
It examines and critically discusses the approaches of different human rights treaty bodies to the topic of abortion. By evaluating their position in light of objections specific to the protection of abortion, as well as more general criticism of the expansion of human rights through evolutive interpretation, the aim is to develop an approach that protects women's reproductive rights while minimising potential points of attack for opponents of the international human rights system.
