Research Title:

Belt and Road Initiative: analysis and implications

Research Outline:

The project delves into the political dimensions of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Beyond its narrative of fostering win-win cooperation, the economic and financial resources mobilized by the Initiative wield significant geopolitical influence. Unlike traditional trade agreements governed by strict institutional frameworks, such as multilateral Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that often incorporate provisions on human rights and environmental standards, the BRI relies on alternative regulatory instruments like cooperation agreements, memoranda of understanding, strategic partnerships, and long-term plans. This pragmatic approach, unencumbered by such constraints, underscores the unique nature of the BRI.

The format of these regulatory instruments, coupled with the expansive scope of the initiative involving numerous countries and impacting a substantial global population, directly or indirectly influences the geopolitical and geo-economic landscape. The economic and political dependencies created through indebtedness, combined with China's soft power strategy centered on infrastructure development, have enabled China to augment its influence on a global scale. However, questions arise regarding the absence of a comprehensive global strategy to regulate the bilateral relationships formed through BRI regulatory instruments. Are these instruments contributing to a fragmentation of the global regulatory system and fostering a polarization of Chinese political hegemony?

The overarching objective of the project is to scrutinize the BRI program from a legal and regulatory perspective. This will entail qualitative research methods, including a thorough review of national and international literature, to shed light on the legal implications and regulatory dynamics surrounding the BRI.
