The Lauterpacht Centre for International Law (LCIL), together with the International Law Association's Committee on Sustainable Resources Management and the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law invites you to: 'Sustainability, Natural Resources and International Law' – an International Experts Panel.

Join us for two fascinating and interactive international law experts panels, with intervenors from around the world, to discuss and be briefed on recent trends in:

1. The Principle of Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in International Law: How is the principle of sustainable use of natural resources, as expressed in the 2002 ILA New Delhi Declaration and the 2012 ILA Sofia Guiding Statements, being reflected in international law? How is the principle being expressed in treaty instruments? How is it being taken into account by courts and tribunals?

2. The Rules & Practices of International Law for Sustainable Resources Management: What are the rules of international law for sustainable management of key resources? What instruments are proving most effective? How are the rules changing practices on the ground in different countries, towards achieving the sustainable development goals.

The event is chaired by:

  • Professor Nico Schrijver (Leiden University, Netherlands). Professor Schrijver is a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the current President of the Institut de Droit International. He used to be the President of the worldwide International Law Association (2010-2012) and served 4 years as a member and vice-chair of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (2008-2016).
